Everybody’s Doing It !
Outsourcing, every industry faces it to some degree so let’s quit whining and deal with it. I recently read a blog about how the shops that do Hollywood special effects are closing. The main reason is outsourcing to India, China, and other places where there is a large population, plenty of knowledge and talent, and of course cheap labor costs. Some places like Foxconn in China where they crank out iPhones even have suicide nets. Of course if you’ve ever worked in an American corporate cube farm those sound like a good idea. 2D animation is also done overseas. The Simpsons and other animated shows originate in the U.S. but the bulk of the time-intensive labor goes somewhere else, probably China. The characters, the stories, the humor, it all happens here. It has to. Ever watched Anime? I rest my case. Animated Explainer videos have become a competitive business and overseas production houses are cranking out lots of cheap animated explainer videos.
It’s the Creativity Stupid
So how do you compete? Creativity! You can’t outsource it to another culture. It just doesn’t work. We’re not being anti-multicultural so don’t start with me. The fact is, effective script writing, especially if your audience is under forty needs to sound contemporary. It needs to reflect the culture, the slang, the pop culture, all that stuff. Some of the overseas script writing sounds like one of those scam emails from an Ethiopian princess stranded with millions of dollars in the bank and no friends. A dry, formal, albeit grammatically correct script just won’t cut it. So if you’re facing this sort of competition keep this in mind; ideas are the way to beat it. Technical skills can be outsourced, but creative ideas are not a commodity.
Know Any Foreign Comedians?
OK, there’s a few, but they are usually making fun of themselves and how they’re trying to adapt to our culture. So this post is especially relevant if your message involves humor. Humor does not translate. No matter how fluent the viewer may be in English, American humor will likely be lost on them. Visual gags may be more universal but wit and other nuanced humor will not resonate across cultures.
Quality Has Value, We Call it ROI
The disadvantage is price. Yes you will command a higher price for your creative work than the overseas outsourced competitor. So the challenge is to sell that advantage and avoid the price war altogether. Sell the value of the unique creative ideas you offer. Sure there will be situations where the budget dictates that the cheapest product gets the deal. If your ideas don’t set you apart in this situation leave it alone. Focus your energy on projects where you have the creative advantage.
You Control the Ideas
So as you face increased overseas competition in your creative business as we do with Animated Explainer Videos keep this in mind; You control the ideas. Keep your offering unique and relevant to your audience. Use your best weapon, the creativity that is unique to you and your target audience.
